This Weekend Full of Many Flying Objects

September 12, 2002
Modoc Record

The much anticipated Migratory Bird Festival and Balloonfest will fill the Modoc skies with flying objects this weekend, but they'll be easily identifiable.

Modoc is one of the hot spots on the Pacific Flyway for migrating ducks, geese, cranes, swans and other birds and the Bird Festival is very entertaining and informative. It features great exhibits as well as hands-on demonstrations and activities. It's an excellent educational, family fun event.

The bird festival, which has been very successful, was moved from May to coincide with the Balloonfest.

On Saturday and Sunday, at 6 a.m. a pancake breakfast will kick things off behind Modoc Middle School on Fourth Street, followed by a hot air balloon lift-off. Look for balloon lift-off about 7:30 a.m. each day, to beat the Modoc winds.

Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m., day-long Birdfest activities will take place at Veterans' Memorial Park, including exhibits, workshops, displays, vendors' booths, Kiddie Korral, raffle, silent auction and much more. A barbecue with live music begins at 4 p.m.

On Sunday, Sept. 15, balloons will lift off at 7:30 a.m. from Modoc Middle School and there will be guided tours of Birds of the Forest, Modoc Wildlife Refuge, and Canyon Creek Ranch.

Sponsors of this year's event are: Modoc Migratory Bird Festival Committee, Alturas Chamber of Commerce, J&S Roofing, Antonio's Cucina Italiana, Cavasso/Sharp Family, Niles Hotel, Miller Family, Heard Plumbing/Modoc Steel, Four Corners Market, Belligerent Duck, Kerr Mortuary, KALT Radio, Larranaga Trucking and Alturas Casino.
